Creating Lasting Value for People and Nature

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project is more than an agricultural initiative. It is a long-term investment in rural communities, environmental restoration, and sustainable economic development. By expanding olive cultivation and producing high-quality olive oil, the project creates opportunities that benefit local families while protecting Ethiopia’s natural resources for future generations.

Our commitment is to ensure that every olive tree planted contributes to stronger communities, healthier ecosystems, and a more sustainable future.

Empowering Rural Communities

The project is designed to improve the lives of rural families by creating new opportunities for income, employment, and agricultural development. As the project grows, local people will benefit from increased economic activity and long-term investment in their communities.

By reinvesting profits from olive oil production, the project will support essential community services and improve the quality of life for farmers and their families.

Creating Employment Opportunities

One of the project’s key goals is to generate sustainable employment for local people. As nursery operations, olive plantations, and olive oil production expand, new jobs will be created for approximately 80 local people, including:

  • Young people seeking employment.
  • Women looking for income-generating opportunities.
  • Smallholder farmers.
  • Agricultural technicians and field workers.
  • Processing and packaging staff.

These employment opportunities will strengthen local livelihoods and contribute to economic growth in the Lalibela region.

Supporting Farmers

Local farmers are at the heart of the project. Through training, technical assistance, and improved agricultural resources, the project will help farmers increase productivity and adopt sustainable farming practices.

Support includes:

  • Irrigation systems.
  • Access to clean water.
  • Farming equipment and tools.
  • Quality olive seedlings.
  • Agricultural training and technical guidance.

These investments will help farmers improve crop production while building long-term resilience.

Improving Food Security and Nutrition

Olive cultivation provides a valuable agricultural product that contributes to healthier diets and stronger food systems. Olive oil is widely recognised for its nutritional value and can be used in everyday cooking, salads, baking, and many traditional and modern dishes.

As local production increases, communities will gain greater access to a healthy, high-quality food product while creating new opportunities for income generation.

Promoting Health and Well-being

Extra virgin olive oil is known for its many health benefits. It is rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, and natural compounds that support heart health and overall well-being. In addition to its culinary uses, olive oil is also valued in natural skincare for its moisturising and protective properties.

By producing high-quality olive oil locally, the project contributes to healthier lifestyles and increased awareness of nutritious food choices.

Protecting the Environment

Environmental conservation is one of the project’s core priorities. Planting thousands of olive trees helps restore degraded landscapes while improving the health of local ecosystems.

The project contributes to:

  • Restoring degraded land.
  • Reducing soil erosion.
  • Improving soil fertility.
  • Increasing biodiversity.
  • Conserving natural resources.
  • Creating greener landscapes.

These environmental improvements help ensure that agricultural land remains productive for future generations.

Addressing Climate Change

Olive trees play an important role in climate change mitigation by absorbing carbon dioxide and increasing green cover. As the project expands, it will contribute to cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, and greater resilience to changing climate conditions.

Through sustainable farming and responsible land management, the project supports Ethiopia’s efforts to build a greener and more climate-resilient future.

Strengthening the Local Economy

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project creates economic opportunities throughout the olive value chain—from nursery production and farming to processing, packaging, and marketing.

As production grows, the project will:

  • Increase household incomes.
  • Support local businesses.
  • Create new market opportunities.
  • Encourage agricultural investment.
  • Promote sustainable rural development.

These activities contribute to a stronger and more resilient local economy.

Generating Foreign Exchange

One of the long-term goals of the project is to export premium Ethiopian olive oil to international markets.

Exporting high-quality olive oil will generate valuable foreign exchange earnings for Ethiopia, helping to strengthen the national economy while showcasing the country’s agricultural potential on the global stage.

Investing in a Better Future

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project is committed to reinvesting its success into community development. Income generated from olive oil sales will be used to expand olive cultivation, improve rural infrastructure, support farmers, and increase access to clean water and irrigation systems.

Every investment made today creates lasting benefits for future generations.

Together We Grow

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project demonstrates how sustainable agriculture can improve lives while protecting the environment. By combining community development, environmental conservation, and economic opportunity, the project is building a future where people and nature thrive together.

Every olive tree planted is a symbol of hope, resilience, and our shared commitment to a greener, healthier, and more prosperous Ethiopia.
