Expanding Olive Cultivation for Sustainable Development

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project is a comprehensive agricultural and community development initiative that combines olive cultivation, olive oil production, environmental conservation, and rural empowerment. The project is designed to create long-term economic, social, and environmental benefits by expanding olive production and reinvesting its success into local communities.

Our scope extends beyond planting olive trees. It includes developing the infrastructure, knowledge, and partnerships needed to build a sustainable olive industry in Ethiopia while improving the quality of life for rural families.

Expansion of the Olive Nursery

A key priority of the project is to expand our nursery to produce a greater number of healthy, high-quality olive seedlings. Increasing nursery capacity will enable the project to supply more trees for new plantations and support farmers who wish to establish their own olive orchards.

The nursery will also serve as a centre for practical learning, where farmers and community members can receive training in seedling production and nursery management.

Expansion of Olive Plantations

To meet the growing demand for olive production, the project will secure additional land for establishing new olive plantations. Expanding the cultivated area will increase olive production, improve long-term sustainability, and create opportunities for more farmers and communities to participate in the project.

These plantations will demonstrate modern, sustainable farming practices while protecting soil and natural resources.

Olive Oil Production Facility

The project includes the establishment of a modern olive oil processing facility equipped with the machinery required to produce high-quality olive oil.

The facility will include:

  • Olive cleaning and sorting equipment.
  • Olive crushing and pressing machinery.
  • Oil extraction and filtration systems.
  • Storage tanks.
  • Bottling and packaging equipment.
  • Quality control and hygiene facilities.

Processing olives locally will increase product value, improve quality, reduce post-harvest losses, and create new employment opportunities.

Irrigation and Water Development

Reliable access to water is essential for sustainable agriculture. The project will invest in irrigation systems, water pumps, water pipelines, storage facilities, and other infrastructure needed to support olive cultivation.

In addition to serving the olive plantations, these improvements will help provide rural farming communities with better access to clean water for agriculture and daily use.

Training and Employment

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project is committed to building local skills and creating sustainable employment opportunities.

Training programmes will focus on:

  • Olive cultivation and orchard management.
  • Nursery management.
  • Irrigation techniques.
  • Harvesting methods.
  • Olive oil processing.
  • Equipment operation.
  • Business and cooperative management.
  • Sustainable agricultural practices.

The project is expected to create employment opportunities for approximately 80 local people, including youth, women, and smallholder farmers.

Community Development

Community development is one of the project’s highest priorities. Revenue generated through olive oil production will be reinvested into programmes that improve rural livelihoods.

These initiatives include:

  • Supporting farmers with irrigation systems.
  • Improving access to clean water.
  • Providing farming tools and equipment.
  • Expanding agricultural training.
  • Strengthening local livelihoods and food security.

By reinvesting in communities, the project creates lasting benefits that extend beyond agriculture.

Environmental Conservation

The project actively contributes to environmental sustainability by increasing tree cover and promoting responsible land management.

Olive cultivation helps to:

  • Restore degraded land.
  • Improve soil fertility.
  • Reduce soil erosion.
  • Increase biodiversity.
  • Improve air quality.
  • Capture carbon and help mitigate climate change.
  • Create greener and healthier landscapes.

These environmental benefits contribute to the long-term resilience of local ecosystems and farming communities.

Export and Economic Growth

A long-term objective of the project is to produce premium Ethiopian olive oil for both domestic and international markets.

By exporting high-quality olive oil, the project aims to generate valuable foreign exchange earnings for Ethiopia while creating a sustainable source of income for the association and participating farmers.

The growth of the olive sector will also encourage investment, innovation, and entrepreneurship within Ethiopia’s agricultural economy.

Partnerships and Investment

Achieving the project’s goals requires strong partnerships and shared commitment.

The Lalibela Olive Tree Project welcomes collaboration with:

  • Government institutions.
  • Embassies.
  • International NGOs.
  • Development agencies.
  • Universities and research institutions.
  • Private companies.
  • Investors and philanthropic organisations.

Financial support, technical expertise, equipment, and knowledge sharing will play an important role in ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the project.

Looking Ahead

The scope of the Lalibela Olive Tree Project continues to expand as we work towards building a complete and sustainable olive value chain in Ethiopia. From producing healthy seedlings and expanding plantations to processing premium olive oil and supporting rural communities, every part of the project contributes to a shared vision of environmental stewardship, economic growth, and community empowerment.

Together, we are creating a greener future where olive cultivation becomes a source of opportunity, resilience, and sustainable development for generations to come.
