Lalibela Olive Tree
Growing a Sustainable Future for Ethiopia
The Lalibela Olive Tree Project is a community-led agricultural and environmental development initiative committed to promoting sustainable olive cultivation and olive oil production in Ethiopia. Established by our association, the project aims to improve rural livelihoods, protect the environment, and create long-term economic opportunities through the cultivation of olive trees and the production of high-quality olive oil.
Our journey began in 2008, when the association invested in 2,000 olive tree seedlings, each purchased at a cost of €8. After years of careful cultivation and dedication, the trees matured and began producing fruit annually. Building on this success, the association expanded the initiative, and since 2012 has successfully cultivated 3,000 olive trees that continue to produce olives each year.
This achievement has demonstrated that olive cultivation can thrive in Ethiopia and has laid the foundation for a larger and more ambitious development programme.
Our Purpose
The Lalibela Olive Tree Project promotes sustainable development through olive cultivation. By expanding olive production, establishing an olive oil processing facility, and reinvesting profits into local communities, we improve livelihoods, support farmers, and protect Ethiopia’s natural environment.
Our Vision
To make Lalibela a leading centre for sustainable olive cultivation and premium olive oil production, creating opportunities for rural communities while supporting Ethiopia’s economic and environmental development.
Our Mission
To expand olive cultivation, establish a modern olive oil processing facility, and build a sustainable value chain that creates jobs, supports local farmers, and produces high-quality Ethiopian olive oil for local and international markets.
